[software] Open source hardware?

Hello,

My name is Todd Kelsey.

I am trying to help a new acquaintance, and am providing some pro bono
advice on marketing/communication, getting the message out - something
pretty nifty, Gnuveau Networks has a solar powered Internet downlink and
terminal server setup - seems to be pretty well engineered, and has been
tested on the ground.

There's open source software components, but then there's the hardware too -
so I guess I'm searching for an open source hardware conservancy -- does
such a thing exist? Brave new world for me. I wondered if one of you wise
Jedi masters could suggest whether a software conservancy would be ok?

They set up a wordpress instance for me at www.solarnetone.org,  just to get
some messaging going to supplement the material that's already there.

I get the feeling like this is a very well engineered solution that is
realistic and a good investment for an NGO, or NPO, etc.

I made it past the first cut in the Knight News Challenge, and am hoping the
Mesh News project will get funding -- if so, I hope to bring together a
solarnetone instance and some laptops from OLPC -- and then I'm trying to
figure out how you could do SMS with an arrangement like this.
